Frequently Asked Questions

1. How often do I need to have my piano tuned?

~This depends on a variety of factors including how often the piano is played, how often it is moved, what level of performance is required of the piano, the amount of temperature and relative humidity change throughout time within the piano's environment, whether the piano is in a church, school, or performance hall setting or in a residential home, how often and how well the piano has been tuned and maintained in its past, and more.  Talk with your piano technician about setting up a beneficial and regular maintenance plan for your particular piano in your specific situation.

Generally Flemmer Piano Services recommends 2 tunings per year for most in-home pianos, once in the winter and once in the summer, or once in spring and once in fall.  A good time to schedule a tuning is about 2 weeks into the season change as the temperature and humidity levels are changing.  If a more cost-effective maintenance plan is desired, one tuning per year can suffice for a minimum level of service.  For churches, schools, piano instructors, music schools, performance halls, restaurants, and assisted living homes more regular tuning is required, usually 4 or more tunings per year are recommended.  If a piano is allowed to go more than 12 months without tuning, the string tension within the instrument falls to a degree that makes future tuning less stable and much more expensive, when the piano is eventually serviced.  A process called a "pitch raise" (an additional preliminary tuning) is then required during the next tuning to bring the entire piano up to "standard pitch" before the final fine tuning can be performed, in effect requiring two tunings (or even more in some cases) before the piano will hold its tune.

2. How much do you charge?
~ The cost of a standard piano tuning for pianos that have been tuned within the last 12 months is $150.  If it has been longer than that, additional tuning is usually required to bring the piano back to "standard pitch" or "concert pitch".  This additional tuning, called a "pitch raise" tuning, is $95 and a neglected piano that hasn't been serviced in many years can expect to require at least one additional pitch raise tuning during its first service appointment in addition to the "standard piano tuning", however it is possible for very neglected pianos to require more than one preliminary pitch raise tuning before the final standard tuning is performed.

3. What kind of pianos do you tune?

~ Every kind, every make and model.  Upright pianos, grand pianos, player pianos, from the smallest pianos to the tallest uprights and longest grands, from antique pianos over 100 years old to brand new pianos that need numerous tunings the first few years out of the factory.  We tune and maintain pianos for every type of client in every type of venue from in-home residential-private pianos, to church pianos, assisted living facility pianos, pianos in elementary schools and high schools, music schools, colleges, piano instructors, restaurants, bars, hotels, hospitals, nightclubs, recording studios, performance venues and every piano in between.

4. How did you get into the piano tuning business?

~ Joey Flemmer, Owner and Founder of Flemmer Piano Services, began playing the piano and taking lessons when he was a young child.  After discontinuing lessons he maintained his love for the instrument as he continued to teach himself throughout the years, learning and playing music that he was most passionate about.  Eventually, in his 30's, he decided to turn his passion for the piano into a dedicated career as a professional piano technician.  After graduating from the American School of Piano Tuning he opened his piano tuning and repair business out of Lodi, California, serving San Joaquin County and Sacramento County throughout Sacramento-Elk Grove-Galt-Lodi-Stockton-Tracy-Manteca and the surrounding areas, and now takes great pride and fulfillment in offering the highest quality workmanship within every piano he services and unparalleled customer service to every highly valued client he has the pleasure of serving.  Joey's passion for the piano is his client's ultimate benefit as he cares for their pianos as if they were his own.
